Fallow Deer (Dama, dama)

In the past century, fallow deer was kept only in game parks, but nowadays they live in the forest freely. Fallow deer has the straight back of a runner, and the shape of its body changes over the years, like the red deer. The stag reacheFallow Deer Stalkings a weight of 50-90Kg, and fallow doe is lighter in weight, around 30-50Kg. Its body is smaller than the red deer’s but it has a larger tail which reaches 16-19cm in length. The stag’s antlers are roughly shovel-shaped. Fallow deer are yellow to brown-reddish in colour, with long dark strips on its back, and white dots on both sides. The bottom and area around the tail are white. In the winter, the fallow deer changes its colors to a brownish-gray, and the dots are not visible. In rare cases a single-color fallow deer can be seen with black, light brown or even clear white coats.

Antlers Development

The first signs of a young fallow buck’s antlers come in May-June, which is around its first birthday. He starts to knock them out in August. Don't Shoot - we'll call you with special offer

Lifestyle & reproduction

Fallow deer live in groups separated by gender. The rutting season starts after the red deer rut season has finished, which is from the middle of October through the middle of November.

During the rut season, stags congregate into herds. Herds form a circle with the strongest stag in middle, and weaker and younger ones on the side. They mark their own little territory inside the herd, with deep husky voices protect their territory and at the same time lure mates into their areas. A fallow doe comes into the circle and chooses its mate.

Fallow does are pregnant for 2 weeks, and give birth usually to only one young. Two fawns are very rare, but not unheard of.

Hunting importance

Fallow deer is highly sought after because of its hugely popular trophies. The strongest trophy was hunted in 1982, with 215.80 CIC points. Fallow deer in Slovakia have high quality trophies and are very much sought after.
